Tips for choosing a carpet color

So many colors and so many styles. But choosing a color for your new carpeting doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

As always, lifestyle is a significant factor in choosing anything. For example, kids, pets, room use, and heavy foot traffic can be deciding factors.

Here are some tips for uncomplicating the process.

Color order

If you're decorating an empty room, choose items with the least color selection first. For instance, sofas can have as few as five or six colors in one style.

Then choose the carpet. Since paint chips are almost unlimited, walls can go last.

Use that logic in other rooms. For example, the floor covering in the bedroom goes first since bedding has many colors.

Stay consistent with warm or cool tones

The wall and floor should harmonize. Now is an excellent time to invest $20 or $25 in a color wheel.

Color accuracy

Color varies slightly in different settings. Look at samples in your lighting and furnishings.

Neutrals can be exciting

Choose a rug with texture, such as cut-and-loops. Berbers, known for their distinctive flecks, can also be an exciting neutral. You can see these, and more, in our carpet store.

Consider the "new neutrals," such as gray or blue. These colors coordinate with just about anything. Blue also adds a little color without overwhelming the space.

Contrast is a good thing

Nothing needs to be an exact match. Just be sure you create a cohesive look.
